Glassware 101

Coupes are my favorite type of glass! Coupes are the original champagne glass and it’s rumored that they were modeled after Marie Antoinette’s breasts. These days we use them for drinks served up (cold but without ice) like a whiskey sour and many gin cocktails.

Martini glasses might be the most iconic type of cocktail glass. A martini glass falls under the stemware category. Meant for drinks served up (like the coupe) and is supposed to be held by the stem so the heat from your hands doesn’t warm your cocktail. These glasses are deceptive and hold a lot more alcohol than they seem to. but a classic one holds 6 ounces.

A Rocks Glass, also known as a low ball or short tumbler, is used for spirit-forward drinks served over ice or neat like an Old Fashion. They usually hold up to 4 oz of liquid with a large ice cube or sphere. If not for an old fashioned, this glass is the best type of glass to use for neat drinks or drinks with a single ice cube that you don’t want to get watered down.

A collins glass is a narrow and tall glass that contains about 10 to 14 ounces. I love to use collins glasses for drinks like a swizzle, mojito, or a tom collins. These glasses have a narrow opening to keep them carbonated longer. The glass I’ve pictured here is technically a Pilsner glass but I enjoy using them as a collins glasses.

A Highball Glass is a type of tumbler that’s used for highball cocktails. These glasses hold about 8 to 12 ounces in total. But for reference, a high ball is a drink that is about 2-3 oz of a spirit topped with soda, like a gin & tonic!

A Tumbler is best used for drinks that are served over ice. Tumblers technically are the umbrella term for a few different glasses like a high ball or collins glass. Most drinking glasses are considered to be tumblers. I use a mid-size tumbler (pictured to the side) for tiki drinks or punches!
