What’s in a Cocktail?

Spirit

The term spirit refers to the type of alcohol. Tequila, Vodka, Gin, Whiskey, Brandy, and Rum are all spirits.

Cordial

A Cordial (pronounced cor-gul) is a syrup that has a very low amount of alcohol added to it.

Liqueur

A liqueur is basically a cordial but with a higher percentage of alcohol!

Syrup

A syrup is liquid sugar, generally an equal-parts mixture of sugar and water. Learn more about how to make your own syrups here!

Garnish

A garnish is a decorative element you add to the top of your drink to add to the visual experience of drinking a cocktail! Sometimes garnishes add the final flavor element to a drink!

Herbs

Using herbs in drinks is a great way to add flavor without adding liquid. Popular herbs to use in cocktails are mint, sage, basil, and rosemary. Feel free to get crazy and use uncommon herbs like bay leaves, cilantro, thyme, and oregano.
