Mellow Fellows

This past weekend I had the pleasure of teaching my second class at my favorite New Hampshire Distillery, Tamworth Distilling! You may notice that I use their spirits in my cocktails quite frequently, as I love the quality and uniqueness of each of their well-crafted spirits. Last class, Gin & Juice, I focused on three wildly different flavor profiles using three of their world-class gins. This go around, I created three wildly different flavor profiles but stuck to one incredible spirit, their brand new Mellow Fellow Whiskey.

Mellow Fellow is a corn whiskey that’s aged for two years and is smooth AF. Named in honor of Hennesseyry David Thoreau as a nod to his desire to live simply and peacefully in nature. Since I can’t teach a cocktail class that the best way to drink this whiskey is to pour it in a glass and sip (I fear that would be a waste of money, but not time) I created three out of the box cocktails that highlight the unique flavors this whiskey has to offer.

Enough talking, let’s get shaking!

Plum Island Spritz

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz Plum Shrub

  • 1 oz Lemon Juice

  • 2 oz Mellow Fellow Whiskey

  • Soda Water

  • Mint

Method

In a shaker, combine plum shrub, lemon, whiskey, and top with ice. Shake for 15 seconds and strain into a collins glass with ice. Top with soda water and garnish with mint!

Plum Shrub:

Combine two cups of sugar and two cups of champagne vinegar in a saucepan over low heat. Add in two cups of diced plums (about three) and stir until sugar is dissolved. Simmer on low heat for about ten minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool. Once cool, strain out plums and store in a nonreactive glass container. Use for up to a month!

The Dude

(Optional) clear out your shaker and add vanilla cream. Dry shake for 20 seconds or use a milk frother to aerate cream. Pour cream over the top of your drink and enjoy!
