Witches Brew

It’s international women’s day, one of my favorite days of the year. We don’t talk about it often but women’s contribution to the history of distilling is lengthy and not often discussed enough!

My drink today is inspired by and is in honor of the 80,000 female distillers who were executed in Europe between 1500 and 1660. European governments accused women of “brewing mind-altering potions” and practicing “dark arts and magic” when in reality, they were just distilling whiskey at home.

To learn more about the history of women and distilling (and how the industry today wouldn’t exist without them) pick up a copy of Whiskey Women: The Untold Story of How Women Saved Bourbon, Scotch, and Irish Whiskey by Fred Minnick! In the meantime enjoy this delicious fiery drink!
